Biographical Information

The Honorable Kathleen B. Burke entered on duty as a United States Magistrate Judge for the Northern District of Ohio on August 20, 2011.  Before her appointment, Judge Burke served as Director of the Ohio Lottery Commission from 2009 to 2011.  She was a partner with the law firm of Jones Day from 1982 to 2009, focusing on commercial litigation.  Judge Burke was the first woman President of the Ohio State Bar Association.  Among numerous professional and community activities, she previously chaired the Ohio Supreme Court’s Rules Advisory Committee and the Board of Notre Dame College and was an officer of the Ohio Legal Assistance Foundation as well as a volunteer with the Cleveland Legal Aid Society and the 3Rs program of the Cleveland Metropolitan Bar Association. She has been a recipient of the Ohio Bar Medal, the YWCA Woman of Achievement  Award, and the St. Thomas More Award presented by the Catholic Lawyers’ Guild of the Diocese of Cleveland.

Judge Burke grew up in New York City and received both her B.A. and J.D. degrees from St. John’s University, where she attended on scholarship and served as an editor of the Law Review.
