2024 Federal Criminal Practice Seminar: Self-Study Course

The Federal Public Defender Office presents the 2024 Federal Criminal Practice Seminar as a self-study course. This course includes Francisco Morales, Assistant Federal Public Defender, Southern District of Texas, presenting on Voir Dire strategies; Benton Martin, Assistant Federal Public Defender, Eastern District of Michigan, presents the Sixth Circuit case update; Claire Cahoon, Assistant Federal Public Defender, Northern District of Ohio, and Ryan Mekota, Psy. D., Neuropsychologist, presents on how to effectively work with a mental health expert; Andrea George, Federal Public Defender, Eastern District of Washington and District of Idaho, discusses representing clients with mental illness in a compassionate, holistic, and client-centered way; and Professor Douglas Berman of The Ohio State University Moritz College of Law presents the annual Supreme Court case update.

This event also includes a bonus presentation by three supervisors from our local U.S. Probation and Pretrial Services Office. Paul Skarupa, Dave Filippi and Craig Stubbs. They discussed matters related to pretrial release and supervision, offer pointers for best practices. A portion of this presentation includes a lively question-and-answer session.

This program has been approved by the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Ohio to satisfy the requirements of Local Rule 57.5(o) and the Criminal Justice Act Plan for CLE training in federal criminal law and procedure. Application has been made to the Ohio Supreme Court CLE Commission for 6.0 hours of general CLE.

The cost for this event is $25.00. To register by check or money order, please complete the attached registration form and mail it to the address listed on the form.

Once registration is received, an e-mail will be sent to you which will include a link to the YouTube video, the course agenda, the course examination and the evaluation form. The evaluation and exam (80% passing grade required for CLE credit) must be returned to christine_sason@fd.org, before CLE credit is awarded. The deadline to register for this event is December 20, 2024, and the deadline to receive CLE credit is December 31, 2024. Handout materials will be provided by e-mail once the exam and evaluation have been received.
